Condemnation of Audio Books

Journal Entry: Sun Aug 17, 2008, 5:15 PM

Firstly, let me say, calmly, that a work of literature is foremostly a WRITTEN WORK. All other forms of its existence is merely interpretational.

Now I will berate this particular one to no end.

OMG, OMFG, NEVER< EVER< EVEEER judge a book off of an audio version because it is truly the furthest thing from what an author pictures when they write! There are several reasons why audio books are evil, the foremost the one where YOU CAN ONLY HAVE ONE NARRATOR so while your lead female sounds like, "Mwa! Bellisimo!" The damn male characters sound like the sick sad fallout of western films, EVEN WHEN THE FUCKING STORY TAKES PLACE IN NEW YORK CITY!!!!!111

Reason numero two: PRONUNCIATION. There is NOOO GOD, the errors in pronunciation *most especially in fantasy where there are very few words which exist in reality* are enough to make me want to slowly insert cigarettes into my cuticles *I thought long and hard and decided that this is the sentiment exactly, slowly sifting a burning object beneath the nail, watching as flesh curls and turns to something fully unrecognizable whiles that sweetly sickening scent of roasting flesh floods my nostrils*
Or something like that^^

Reason number three: PERSON~ALITY. My Mediterranean prince sounds like a friggin cowboy, my heroine is suddenly emo, my villian, oh *mourning the death of her villain*

Reason number four: I, even before this, have been slightly against audio books. They take away an aesthetic element when they make one person read the story, forcing it to don only one identity. The reason a story exists is TO BE READ. the words were adhered together by blood, sweat and tears TO BE READ. I spent three years (+two in publishing) and many authors have spent decades and decades because they want their stories TO BE READ, not have someone READ IT TO YOU!!
I accept that audio books are a necessity and by all means support their existence in the sense that it opens books to people who otherwise would be unable to read it. In that sense, I more than happily welcome people to buy them, enjoy them. But if you are capable of READING in the sense of taking a book and putting it in front of you and perusing it with your eyeballs and getting your brain all drenched with the plot and the words and the things that even the author can't see sometimes, THERE IS NO SANE REASON WHY YOU SHOULD JUST LISTEN TO AN AUDIOBOOK!!
:star: I am sorry if this inadvertantly offends anyone who might be reading it (though I am fully convinced no one actually reads what I write here anyway) but this is truly how I feel. I'm sure there are narrators who can do audio books amazing justice, ones to make me sob and such, but I still stand by my claim that a book, if in a book form, should be read by an individual, by hand.

Thank you for humoring my momentary lapse of control.

For no particular reason whatsoever, I am updating *The guilt is catching up after weeks, upon weeks of neglect*
As of right now, I am realizing that I have work, like, DO OR DIE WORK, to do! *A book to finish proofing, among other things*
It's been mmm, two years since the "yah, I'm publishing a book" escapade began and finally, FINALLY I have a hard copy in my hand *happy dances*
The cover can be found here [link] I didn't notice it had that little angl wing on the left shoulder until I took a picture and now I'm so amused by it!*it's there, look hard*
Yes! So I have three, THREE more commissions left! *hahaha, the rookie artist endeavor goes on!* And I hope I can finish those before um--I get sued or something ^^''...
Ha---excedrin is a pain in the ass and not helping my headche so I guess that means I should *stop popping over the counter pills* and go lie down like a good, normal person!
I'll update about this book when I'm concious!!

Commission [INFO]

:star: :star: Commission [INFO]:star: :star:
If you want me to do an art commission, July into mid-August is the time as, starting the 14th, I will now be open to them!
I have about two commissions that people have already asked for so not counting those, I think I want to take about ten more. After I have ten stacked up, I'll close for a while so that I don't over load myself with work all at once.

Here are the Rules:
* If you want a commission done by me, send a message to either my email odessa-chan@optonline.net or you can leave a note on my account here. [link]
In this message, be sure to include:

1.The details of your commission. If the character is a public one, or one from a known show or a movie, please include his or her name and where they are featured, as well as the specifications of what you'd like them to be doing in the pic [poses, etc].
If it is an original character, please be very specific in describing his or her physical appearance and general personality. In all cases, reference pictures [also dollmaker versions and original drawings] are welcome :).
My commissions are all either portraits, busts, or knee-up shots, taking poses into account.
A full body drawing will require an additional 5$.

2.Whether you would like your commission to be a pencil sketch, inked, or full colored. NOTE: These three are listed according to increasing price.

3.Your address for postage.

:star: :star: PRICING::star: :star:
I understand that people all have their own financial situations and I really wish I could make my prices lower, but the art supplies and stamps cost money. Sorry, but they cannot be changed.
Pencil Sketch: $8 USD
Inked Drawing: $10 USD
Full Color Drawing: $15 USD
**All postage must take place within the United States**
The price for full bodies are:
Pencil Sketch: $13 USD
Inked Drawing: $15 USD
Full Color Drawing: $20 USD

**Please make all payments in the form of check or money orders, payable to Latoya Raveneau**
I will not require the payment in advance but a commission agreement is considered to be binding once I begin the piece. It is a waste of time, effort and money if a client cancels on me halfway, so I will require payment whether or not the commission is canceled; once I've done the piece, I will post a "proof" copy on both my DA and facebook in order for my client to see, then, once the money is received, mail out the original piece in a photo envelope.

NOTE: Due to the backlighting and color distortiong tendencies of a computer monitor, the "proof" may sometimes appear slightly different from the actual piece. I do not alter my pictures with photoshop and all are colored traditionally by hand so the scans can some times appear lighter or more contrasted than the original
work.

Thank you so much for your support!!

I swear I'm not dead, just been busy with finishing homework and work and college and work and dance and work and guess where I'm going to school next year?
UCLA! :boogie:
Yah, its the farthest place I applied to[from New York] but I preferred its art program and financial fringe-benefits the most :)
So next year, CA

There will be art!

With any luck, there will be a STATUE [year end MA project/final] by the due date of next Wednesday

For now, I just felt like reaffirming my existence... I question it, *staring into the abyss*
ah, I have a final in an hour...
*I really have to make a statue? Why did I bring this upon myself, B??*

California!!

Hehe, UCLA orientation thing in a week and finally, FINALLY,
a legite reason for me to go west coast! <3333333333!!

I'm suddenly completely obsessed with this school and it looks near 99.9% certain I'll be going there come September--such a sweet deal, such a sweet city, *so energized on her cappucino*

And another excuse to miss school--lol, actually its pretty BAD that I'm missing school AGAIN. At this rate, I'll get suspended before I can even send in my SIR for UCLA. (There are a lot of abbreviations in college things, lmfao)

So, off to study---(AP bio, hisssssss)-- in a halfhearted effort to keep that GPA (badum-cha, the abbreviations go on) from going MIA. WTF, school should be done with by now...
